Rattlesnake Vaccine

Red Rock Biologics has released a vaccine to aid in the prevention of serious complications from rattlesnake bites. This vaccine is now available along with their canine rattlesnake vaccine. These vaccines are currently only available through licensed veterinarians.

The vaccine is given by intramuscular injection with a series of 3 initial vaccinations followed by semi-annual boosters. Since rattlesnake activity is greatest in warmer months the initial vaccine series or the booster vaccine should be completed one month prior to this time.

We have treated severe rattlesnake bites in horses at Crater animal Clinic, with one horse that was bitten on the nose requiring an emergency tracheotomy due to severe swelling and inability to breathe adequately. Even with vaccination it is recommended that a veterinarian see animals that are suspected to have been bitten by a rattlesnake, as additional treatment may be required.

If you feel that your horse or dog may be at risk for rattlesnake bites you should consider protection with the new vaccine. If you have further questions please contact us.
